Spectroscopy is the study of how light and other forms of radiation are absorbed and emitted by materials. It entails the splitting of light (or, more correctly, electromagnetic radiation) into its component wavelengths (a spectrum), much as a prism does with light. Indeed, early spectroscopy was performed using a prism and photographic plates. Modern spectroscopy disperses light using diffraction gratings, which are then projected onto CCDs (charge-coupled devices), similar to those used in digital cameras. 2D spectra may be readily taken from this digital format and edited to create 1D spectra containing a wealth of relevant data. In physical and analytical chemistry, spectroscopy is used to detect, identify, and quantify the molecular and/or structural composition of a material. Each molecule and atom reflects, absorbs, or emits electromagnetic energy uniquely. Recently, the concept of spectroscopy was broadened to encompass the study of the interactions of particles such as electrons, protons, and ions with other particles as a function of their impact energy.
This book elucidates new techniques and their applications in a multidisciplinary approach. It talks in detail about the various uses and methods of information and spectroscopy. It provides a straightforward detail of spectroscopy, showing what it can do and how it does it, together with a clear, integrated and objective account of the wealth of information that can be derived from spectra. It deals with x-ray spectroscopy, single and double laser pulse interaction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and application of infrared spectroscopy. It also explores fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, application of mass spectroscopy, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy and application of fluorescence spectroscopy. The aim of this book is to provide this complex subject in an easy to understand and student friendly manner. The topics included in this book on spectroscopy are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. As this field is emerging at a rapid pace, the contents of this book will help the readers understand the modern concepts and applications of the subject.
